The Expansive Narrative:digital storytelling Wendy Babcox    Tuition: $1145  ARAC Actual Cost: $1345  Studio Fee: $75 Code: P0510  Enrollment Limit 10 July 20 - 24 Wendy Babcox, Goodbye (detail) CONCEPT: As artists who respond to the visual environment, our experience is in constant flux. The advances of imaging technologies create marvelous opportunities to engage with our sensory environment, in particular through the juxtaposition of image, sound and text. This workshop will consider the art of storytelling. We will begin by looking at a range of projects that successfully integrate image and sound. Students will experiment with an array of recording equipment and look at ways to gather audio material in the form of interviews, narration, ambient sound and music. We will investigate the importance of playful and experimental approaches to gathering material for projects but also pay specific attention to the importance of editing the materials to create powerful multi-media stories. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students will create images using digital cameras and use digital recorders to capture audio. Software applications including iMovie, iPhoto and Audacity will be discussed and demonstrated. ACTIVITIES: Each morning will begin with creativity exercises. Students will photograph, collect audio and spend the afternoon editing these materials into finished works. SKILL LEVEL: Open to All – Any skill/knowledge level. FACULTY:  Wendy Babcox is a British interdisciplinary artist who lives in Tampa, Florida, and teaches at the University of South Florida. Her work exists in a wide variety of media including photography, video, installation and performance. She draws upon the interrelatedness of site, place and the contemporary in her recent works, calling upon the imagery of animals and tourist attractions. She is also a member of the 6+ Collective. www.wendybabcox.com CORE class June 29 - July 3 Animated Documentary with Flash David Fain    Tuition: $1145  ARAC Actual Cost: $1345  Studio Fee: $75 Code: P0511  Enrollment Limit 10 Projection Beyond the Screen Miwa Matreyek    Tuition: $1145  ARAC Actual Cost: $1345  Studio Fee: $150 Code: P0819  Enrollment Limit 10 Miwa Matreyek, still from Dreaming of Lucid Living (detail) CONCEPT: What kind of life can digital images take on outside of the traditional video screen or monitor? This workshop will explore this question using content (animation, video, digital images, etc.) generated by the participants. The class will think critically about how the image changes in its presence and meaning as it is projected in space, on objects and on the body itself. Students will explore a wide range of approaches, from installation, theater, performance to interactivity. Collaboration with other participants is encouraged, as is crossdisciplinary experimentation. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: The course is designed for digital imagebased artists (photography, video, and animation) interested in incorporating installation, interactivity or performance in their work. ACTIVITIES:  Each session will begin with demonstrations of techniques and approaches to spatiality and projected image manipulation. From there, we will expand to a free-form exploration of how each student’s media can be applied to space, body and object. SKILL LEVEL: Level III – See page 15 for skill level descriptions. Having the skills to create, edit, and manipulate your own digital imagery (i.e. in Photoshop or AfterEffects) is required. CONCEPT:  This workshop is an introduction to documentary animation utilizing Flash software. The class will cover basic principles of animation, learning how to build digital puppets, animating lip sync dialogue, as well as conceptual lectures and discussions in animated documentary. Students will create a non-fiction animation using a documentary soundtrack and computer-animated imagery. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students will gain a basic understanding of animation using Flash software and explore how the medium can be used in communicating non-fiction narratives. ACTIVITIES:  Students will complete short exercises demonstrating basic animation techniques. Animated films and documentaries will be screened and discussed. Students will produce a short film based on their interests. SKILL LEVEL: Level I – See page 15 for skill level descriptions. 16   W W W.ANDER SONRANCH.ORG 970/923-3181 Video Montage:realism to surrealism Jillian McDonald    Tuition: $1145  ARAC Actual Cost: $1345  Studio Fee: $75 Code: P1024  Enrollment Limit 10 Jillian McDonald, Staring Contest with Brad Pitt (detail) CONCEPT:  Re-imagine familiar narratives. In this class, anything is possible. Sharks patrol the swimming pool ; rabbits groom themselves on the couch; movie stars gaze lovingly at you across your lawn. Bring your video footage or plan to shoot on site. This workshop will explore video compositing, green screen, animation and rotoscoping, as students shoot their own footage and combine it with found footage, photographs and other images. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students will explore video editing, compositing, green screen, rotoscoping, masking and animation using Final Cut Pro and Adobe AfterAffects. FACULTY: Miwa Matreyek is an animator/director and multimedia artist who creates animated short films as well as solo and collaborative performance works that integrate animation and live performance using projections. She received her MFA in Experimental Animation and Integrated Media from the California Institute of the Arts; she is also the recipient of the 2006 Princess Grace Award for Film, and the Princess Grace 2008 Special Projects grant. Her solo performance work, Dreaming of Lucid Living, won the Student Grand Prix and Audience Choice Award for Best Installation at the Platform International Animation Festival, 2007. www.semihemisphere.com Sheila M. Our goal will be to bridge the gap between the digital and the physical, to use software to control actual physical events in the real world, and to do so playfully and creatively. In this workshop, students will focus on working with rhythms of light and sound. The objects we create will be hybrids: part machine, part sculpture, part installation, part musical instrument. Using micro-controllers, motors, lights and sensors, as well as wood, metal and found objects, students will explore the terrain where sculpture, music and digital media converge. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We will use a program called Max/MSP and a micro-controller called Arduino. Students will learn how to program in this environment. Sculpture techniques will include basic welding, wood construction, bricolage and assemblage. ACTIVITIES:  Participants will spend time brainstorming, programming, prototyping, troubleshooting, building, testing, listening, tinkering and improvising. SKILL LEVEL: Open to All – Any skill/knowledge level. FACULTY:  Robin Mandel received his MFA in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2005. He has recently exhibited in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan,
