CONCEPT: Is your photographic vision stuck in black and white?
Awaken your photography and tell stories in vivid details
using the language of color. In this class we will examine the
expressive possibilities of color photography. Through artist
presentations, field trips and interactive exercises we will
explore the emotions and energy associated with color as we
push the boundaries of your expression. We will explore the
magnificent natural areas surrounding Anderson Ranch and
work in classroom to review portfolios and the photographic
products of our photo journeys.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Digital SLR cameras, Photoshop Lightroom and digital output to create images.
ACTIVITIES: Significant time will be devoted to the creation of
new work through field trips to surrounding locales. Students
will return to the classroom to review portfolios as well edit,
process and print their images.
SKILL LEVEL: Levels II - III (Minimum Skill Level II) – See page
10 for skill level descriptions.
FACULTY: Amy Stein is a photographer and teacher based
in New York City. Her work explores our evolving isolation
from community, culture and the environment. Her work has
been exhibited nationally and internationally and is featured in
many private and public collections such as the Philadelphia
Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Photography. In 2007, she was named one of the top 15 emerging
photographers in the world by American Photo and she won
the Critical Mass Book Award. A monograph of Domesticated
won the best book award at the 2008 New York Photo Festival. Amy teaches photography at Parsons The New School for
Design and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. She is
represented by Robert Koch Gallery in San Francisco and Pool
Gallery in Berlin. www.amystein.com
CONCEPT: Shooting images with your camera is just the beginning of the creative process, but what’s the next step? This
workshop will expand your image-making vocabulary as it
teaches you how to work with a variety of negatives, from
digital to film, then print those negatives using a variety of
alternative processes. Students will explore printing methods
using hand-applied emulsions from early photographic history,
as well as contemporary alternative image-making techniques
using the varied surfaces of paper, wood, glass, metal and fabric. Once the images are made, students will explore different
ways to finish the work using simple mat cutting and bookbinding techniques to create final works of art. By the end of
the week, students will have a strong foundation in a variety of
printing processes and different ways to display their work.
ACTIVITIES: Throughout the workshop, there will be technical
photographic demonstrations and group discussions. Significant time will be devoted to the creation of new work through
shooting and printing.
SKILL LEVEL: Level II – See page 10 for skill level descriptions.
