CONCEPT: Teens, do you have what it takes to create your own video game?
If so, this workshop is for you! Learn everything you need to design and build
your own 3-D video game. Master the key technical and creative components of
video game design. This includes level design and function, the creation of 3-D
characters, lighting, sound effects, programming as well as game maps, basic
designs and concept art.

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students work with 3-D modeling techniques, Adobe
Photoshop, Unreal Engine 4 and use Modo 3-D (Luxology). Game engine processes
are covered in depth.

ACTIVITIES: We work in teams using Unreal Engine 4 to create a series of game
worlds and Modo 3-D (Luxology) to create original game content. Students learn
how to script events like moving objects such as doors, platforms and characters.
We use existing assets provided by Epic (maker of Unreal) and create immersive
real-time game environments.
FACULTY: Chuck Carter has been working in the science and entertainment
industries for over thirty years. He worked on the ground-breaking video game,
“Myst”, and over two dozen video games in a variety of art, animation and
management roles. His non-game work includes illustrations for National
Geographic, Scientific American, the BBC, Wired Magazine, and the Department
of Defense, among others. Chuck Carter founded Eagre Games, and is designing a
series of non-violent immersive adventure games for desktop and mobile platforms

SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: Learn the art and craft of woodturning. This workshop starts with
the basics of spindle turning and continue through faceplate work. Learn to use
turning tools and explore chucking possibilities and finishing techniques. Topics
include lathe, tools, safety, sharpening, wood selection, turning techniques,
sanding, finishing and more. Projects include spinning tops, bottle stoppers,
boxes, plates and bowls.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students work with kiln-dried wood, practice spindle
turning and faceplate turning and use food-safe finishes.
ACTIVITIES: We start with a demonstration and explanation of the project
followed by the students turning same.

FACULTY: Nick Cook is a full-time production turner producing a wide variety of
gift items, one-of-a-kind bowls and vessels as well as work for furniture makers
and millwork contractors. He spends much of his time teaching both individuals
and groups throughout the country. He has taught workshops in the U.S., Canada,
Australia and Taiwan and has participated in national symposiums in England,
New Zealand and Ireland. He is a founding member of the American Association
of Woodturners and served as Vice President and Conference Coordinator. Nick
was named the 12th honorary lifetime member of the AAW. He has written
numerous articles for various woodturning publications including American
Woodturner, Woodworkers Journal and American Woodworker.
