Ahoy Mateys! Hop on board our pirate ship and join the
crew! This week, we craft a variety of ceramic pieces
that find inspiration from a pirate’s life at sea. We begin
by mixing squishy clay between our toes and learning a
pirate’s jig, then we take time to create clay grog mugs
and bone soup bowls. We also make our very own pirate
necklaces and sculpt a parrot friend! When our clay
creations head off to the kiln, we must prepare to hoist
our Jolly Roger flags and have fun tie-dyeing do-rags! Oh,
the wild things we will discover while on the ocean blue!
Join us as we build our very own Phoenician fleet!
This week we discover the rich history and culture of
Phoenician trade. In this workshop, each student will craft
a galley ship from wood complete with oarsmen and sails.
We take time to build the port, townsmen, and various
trading items. Together we dye cloth purple like the Tyrian
purple, sculpt terracotta jars, and learn to navigate the
stars as they did. The final day we put our boats to the
test and assemble our Phoenician ports for all to see!
A Pirate’s Life for Me
SALLY GIERKE has been an elementary school teacher
and professional potter for four decades. Her work ranges
from functional objects to large-scale murals, some having
been undertaken as multi-generational collaborations
under her direction. She has been an artist-in-residence
in seven national parks and previously worked with kids
at Anderson Ranch. She is excited to return!
Phoenician Trade Ships
SYLVIE ROSENTHAL started building at age six at the
Eli Whitney Museum where she made circuses, catapults,
rockets and robots and was introduced to the work of
great inventors and artists such as Alexander Calder,
Leonardo DaVinci and AC Gilbert. She has taught and
designed children’s classes for over 20 years.
