Wood and iron bonded eons ago and were the bases of a pre-industrial building culture that was mutually supportive: a synergy. Each material remains as metaphorical anchors of culture. The essential characters of wood and metal are investigated in the studio. A range of processes from simple hand-work to digital design are explored. An ability in one area supports and opens possibilities in the creative use of new materials. Students can expect a range of specific form-making strategies, lively discussions and innovative approaches that tread the margin of art/craft. CONCEPT: Interruptions, stoppages and resumptions are themes we explore as we create assemblage pieces in both two and three dimensions. We make collages and constructions from the elements we create, find or repurpose. The techniques we use to dis-connect (ripping, slicing, shredding, burning) and re-connect (sewing, nailing, knotting) are as important as the elements themselves, as we question how our choices create a visual language and turn disparate materials into a whole. The point is to explore materials and processes, and to respond to those explorations. We study the work of artists such as Leonardo Drew, Chakia Booker, Tara Donovan, El Anatsui and Derrick Velasquez. CONCEPT: In this workshop, the rigid structure of metal and wood is paired with a range of complementary flexible surfaces, for a focused sculptural experimentation around the elements of line and plane. Fabricate threedimensional line drawings by shaping and welding steel rod, or cut and join wood pieces. Then explore attaching a range of flexible materials - from muslin to felt, paper to plastic - to make dynamic new sculptures. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use solid wood, plywood, veneer, mild steel sheets, bars, tubes, drawing materials and computer assisted lay-out, a variety of compound building strategies for both steel and wood, traditional joinery, steel fab
