Each piece of stone has its own personality, revealed through its vein, texture and color, making it an attractive material for the sculptor. In this workshop, we get friendly with soft alabaster as we use both power and hand tools in a subtractive process. CONCEPT: Challenge your perception of the world around you and develop your creative mind while observing the environment. Using found objects from society and nature as a starting point, we investigate an imaginative narrative by thinking through its form, life and meaning. The act of creating is an important language in your work. This workshop focus less on mastering skills and more on intuition in the artistIc decision making process. CONCEPT: How to transform the “printed” object into a work of art? From concept development to production this workshop tackles issues around digital fabrication. We create basic designs using the Rhino software merged with digital files created with a 3-D scanner. Our objects are made on Makerbot 3-D printers then transformed through basic silicone mold making and plastic casting applications. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use Utah alabaster, power and hand chisels, grinders, sanders and stonefinishing materials. ACTIVITIES: We learn through slide lectures and demonstrations that introduce participants to ideas, methods and techniques of stone carving. Time is spent in the studio, carving, observing each other’s works and enjoying friendly discussion.
