CONCEPT: Challenge the notion of artistic limits to
awe-inspiring results. This workshop is structured
as a print intensive with a highly exploratory focus,
taking risks in making and yielding wonderful results.
No printmaking experience is needed, but the class is
not for the faint of heart. Do you want a brilliant body
of work at the end of a one-week intensive? Can you
work in ways that challenge your normal methods?
Then come ready to work fearlessly, with intention and
dedication and leave the workshop in a braver place
than you began.
CONCEPT: Explore the art of experimental printmaking
through immersion. This course explores experimental
printmaking with an emphasis on shaped plates, pattern
and layering of imagery. Students are immersed in this
mix to create a unique series of layered and lyrical
prints that defy a beginning or end point. This workshop
encourages open-ended exploration and improvisation
with various printmaking media.
CONCEPT: Monotypes are often described as “painterly
prints,” but using mylar to make hand-cut stencils can
yield a more graphic, clean-edged effect. This workshop
is open to painters and printmakers alike who are
intrigued by the process of creating one-of-a-kind prints.
Stencil methods are introduced as well as mark-making
processes, background blends, gum Arabic transfers
and other fascinating monotype techniques. Students
have the opportunity to translate drawings, paintings
and photographs into the print form using Plexiglas
plates as a printing surface.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students begin with etching
techniques utilizing alcohol-based markers and spray
paints as stop outs and stencils with aquatints. We
use relief techniques for building fields of color and
pronto-plate lithography for adding specifics to the
vast monoprint body of work we create.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students explore monoprint,
drypoint on plastic plates, collagraph, stencil and
direct printing techniques. Plate-making and printing
demonstrations occur daily with an emphasis on
traditional as well as non-traditional possibilities. The
workshop also explores advanced color mixing, layering
of imagery and transparency in inks.
ACTIVITIES: We spend our mornings demonstrating
print processes while afternoons are dedicated to
intensive work sessions. The last two days are spent
putting together the various processes and materials
into a cohesive body of monoprints. Emphasis is
placed on combining drawings from nature with presourced materials.
ACTIVITIES: We begin with studio demonstrations of
distinct printmaking techniques: additive and reductive
monoprint, drypoint, stencil techniques, collagraph, and
direct printing techniques, color mixing, transparency
and printing in layers. Daily class time includes studio
demonstrations, time for experimenting and time for
individual focused exploration with instructor support.
Group discussions are held during the second half of the
week.
