Students who sign up for both of Teresa’s workshops will receive 20% off their second class tuition. SKILL LEVEL: Open to all CONCEPT: Sharpen your drawing skills or learn them for the first time. This workshop is an intensive investigation into traditional drawing techniques. We begin by studying the human form by working with a live nude model to study contour, proportion, volume and gesture. We move on to study concepts of space through perspective drawing, still life, and landscape. Discussion and observation of representation vs. abstraction are woven throughout the class. Quick studies as well as longer drawings are explored through working both inside and outside of the studio with a variety of media and subjects. SKILL LEVEL: Open to all MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Student use charcoal, pencil, conté crayon, litho crayon, graphite and ink drawing techniques. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students practice abstract painting (both oil and acrylic), drawing, collage techniques and media. ACTIVITIES: We learn through technical demonstrations, drawing exercises, slide lectures and group and individual discussion. This workshop uses concrete exercises, techniques, and discussion to develop personal abstract language and expression. Each class starts with a technical demonstration and discussion. We then focus on warm-up exercises to get everyone working quickly and without hesitation. Next we focus on problems specifically designed to both create and expand upon abstract vocabulary. In the afternoon we increase the breadth and depth of our understanding of abstract art with a slide lecture and discussion. The remainder of the day consists of individual exploration and discussion with the instructor. FACULTY: Teresa Booth Brown is an abstract painter who works in oil, collage, drawing and installation. In addition to teaching and showing, Teresa has been a fellow at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, a resident at the Ucross Foundation, and a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome. www.teresaboothbrown.com Tuition: $920 OR Tuition + Studio Support Donation: $1120 Studio Fee: $75  Code: D1220  Enrollment Limit 10 [email protected] SKILL LEVEL: Open to all CONCEPT: Interruptions, stoppages and resumptions are themes we explore as we create assemblage pieces in both two and three dimensions. We make collages and constructions from the elements we create, find or repurpose. The techniques we use to dis-connect (ripping, slicing, shredding, burning) and re-connect (sewing, nailing, knotting) are as important as the elements themselves, as we question how our choices create a visual language and turn disparate materials into a whole. The point is to explore materials and processes, and to respond to those explorations. We study the work of artists such as Leonardo Drew, Chakia Booker, Tara Donovan, El Anatsui and Derrick Velasquez. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students are encouraged to bring materials or plan to procure materials through scavenging or thrift shopping. This class is about creative problem solving and generating ideas, learning to improvise and responding both conceptually and materially. ACTIVITIES: We learn through slide presentations, lectures and warm-up exercises. We spend most of the day working on projects and with one-on-one instruction and conversation. We have a few readings with subsequent discussions. There are short class critiques after each assignment. FACULTY: Brenda Mallory received her B.F.A. from Pacific Northwest College of Art. She has received grants from the Oregon Arts Commission, Regional Arts & Culture Council, and the Foundation for Contemporary Art in New York. She is an M.F.A. Mentor in the Applied Craft and Design Program at PNCA + OCAC. Brenda lives and works in Portland, OR. www.brendamallory.com Tuition: $920 OR Tuition + Studio Support Donation: $1120 Studio Fee: $75  Code: D1219  Enrollment Limit 10
