SKILL LEVEL: I
CONCEPT: Investigate the current state of “painting”
in a contemporary context with this hand-on workshop.
The boundary of painting and sculpture has become
increasingly blurred. As the art world becomes more
interdisciplinary, we as makers have the opportunity
to clarify our inte ntions and employ systems and
methodologies that clearly communicate our ideas.
Through readings and discussions we have the
opportunity to define for ourselves the boundary of
“image” and “object”.
CONCEPT: If painting is a grand mansion with the foyer
being realism, we walk through the door, and explore the
surrounding rooms of figuration to abstraction. Students
are exposed to practical techniques involving building
different types of grounds, color mixing, and when to
employ tightness vs. looseness. We look at techniques for
keeping one’s work as fresh as possible, simultaneously
the scaffolding to create bodies of work for an exhibition.
CONCEPT: Capture the mood of a particular place or
moment in time with the techniques taught in this class.
By working from a brief pencil or watercolor sketch, using
a portable, simplified palette, just a few brushes, and
keeping it small, students will learn to become adept in
creating small-format watercolor studies. The techniques
employed in this class are designed to capture the mood
of a place or moment. These techniques easily translate
to landscape, still-life or figurative studies.

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use acrylic and
oil painting, collage, papier-mâché, found object
assemblage, basic woodworking techniques and cold
connections. Artists such as Katherina Grosse and
Jessica Stockholder serve as launching-off points for
dialogue and exercises. Students will have access to both
the painting and sculpture studios.
ACTIVITIES: We learn with daily exercises, slide
lectures, readings and discussion, faculty led demos,
individual and group critiques and ample studio time.
FACULTY: Jenene Nagy and Joshua West Smith
are partners of the curatorial project TILT Export:, an
independent art initiative that works in partnership with
a variety of venues to produce its exhibitions. TILT Export:
serves as a catalyst for opportunity, awareness and the
challenging of ideas through art making.

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: With an emphasis on safe
studio practices, students learn techniques for oil painting
(used by Rembrandt and Velasquez) that minimize
exposure to toxic chemicals. As modern technology is
a painter’s powerful ally, computer technologies will
be incorporated for students who are interested in
integrating digital tools with their practice.
ACTIVITIES: We will begin with initial technical
instruction and demonstrations and then move on to
produce multiple paintings from beginning to end over
the course of the week.
FACULTY: Kimberly Brooks is a contemporary American
painter that blends figuration and abstraction to explore
a variety of subjects dealing with memory, history and
identity. Kimberly exhibits nationally. Her work has been
showcased in numerous publications and exhibitions.
