SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: Use the art of open segmented woodturning
to create interesting effects and unique designs in wood.
When pursuing the art of open segmented woodturning,
we glue multiple species of wood together, and leave
gaps between each segment in order to achieve unique
effects that highlight the individual qualities of a variety
of wood. It’s a design adventure, and each participant
in this workshop learns techniques and theory, explores
design concepts, and constructs and turns an open
segmented bowl. By the end of the week, students
not only improve their turning skills, but have a better
understanding of the design and techniques necessary
for open segmented turnings.
CONCEPT: Stop thinking about traditional lathe forms
like bowls or goblets, and join us as we shift focus to
the arcs and curved surfaces created by the lathe. This
fosters an entirely novel visual language when creating
more advanced turned forms. There is an emphasis on
understanding concepts ranging from creative problem
solving, design, visual abstraction, to general theory on
what makes quality sculptural endeavors.
CONCEPT: Impress your friends and family with the
wide variety of objects you can make after completing
this workshop. All the projects are kitchen related and
include both spindle and faceplate turning techniques.
We start with the basics of tool selection, sharpening,
chucking techniques then go into sanding and finishing.
Projects include honey dippers, rolling pins, salt shakers
and pepper mills, bottle stoppers, bowls and plates along
with a few special surprises.

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use kiln-dried wood,
cutting, design, assembly and woodturning.
ACTIVITIES: Demonstrations cover the safe cutting of
small pieces, jig construction, wood movement, precise
layout, and successful tool control. Slide lectures offer
a look at open-segmented woodturning as a design
element. Studio time is devoted to designing and turning
open segmented vessels, jig construction, and successful
completion of an open segmented project.

ACTIVITIES: We view demonstrations with plenty
of guided work time. We have discussions on problem
solving the form as we re-engage the woodturning lathe
with a new perspective.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use kiln-dried wood,
spindle turning and faceplate turning and food safe
finishes.
ACTIVITIES: We start with a demonstration and
explanation of the project followed by the students
turning similar works.
FACULTY: Derek Weidman is a woodturner from
southeastern Pennsylvania . His approach involves multiaxis turning as the foundation of his work. By using the
unique shaping processes of turning, Derek has created a
descriptive visual language that only the lathe can speak.
He has a deep connection to nature, and his appreciation
for wildlife has had a significant impact on his work.

FACULTY: Nick Cook is a full-time production turner
producing a wide variety of gift items, one-of-a-kind
bowls and vessels as well as work for furniture makers
and millwork contractors. He spends much of his time
teaching both individuals and groups nationally and
internationally. He is a founding member of the American
Association of Woodturners and served as Vice President
and Conference Coordinator. Nick was named the 12th
honorary lifetime member of the AAW. He has written
numerous articles for various woodturning publications
including American Woodturner, Woodworkers Journal
and American Woodworker.
