Seth Rolland, Trimerous Chair (detail) Vivian Beer, Anchored Candy No. 5 September 7 - 25 September 7 - 25 Bending, Shaping & Carving for Woodworkers & Sculptors Design & Fab-ulous Vivian Beer Dean Pulver & Seth Rolland SKILL LEVEL: II - IV SKILL LEVEL: II – IV CONCEPT: If you’re designing a new table, chair, or sculptural piece, it’s helpful to have as many approaches as possible to create the forms and surfaces that you imagine. This class encourages individuals to pursue creative experimentation and development by exploring various techniques to build and sculpt sophisticated forms with texture. Starting with drawings, models, mockups, and samples, develop your ideas into a final piece. CONCEPT: In this class we concentrate on the relationship between design, technique, and fabrication, specifically in steel and using compound curves. Compound curves can be glamorous and seductive due to their visceral nature. These biomorphic forms are difficult to achieve in steel, and even trickier to plan. Vivian takes you through techniques she uses in digital and manual design. Technical demonstrations and studio time will be augmented with discussions and presentations. Together we explore how we affect materials and how those materials can reflect ourselves and the world around us. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students work with airdried lumber and use the following techniques: carving and shaping, steam bending, hot pipe bending, bent lamination and vacuum forming. In addition, students will practice stack lamination, coopering, brick laying and techniques for joining and finishing. ACTIVITIES: We view slide presentations, technical demonstrations and provide time to develop your personal style. We design and create mockups for our projects. All receive plenty of one-on-one instruction and feedback to complete a final project. FACULTY: Dean Pulver is a full time furniture maker and sculptor living in Taos, NM.
