From simple clear wood finishes to using dyes, stains and other supplies, learn the basics for producing quality finished surfaces on your projects. Each student completes a set of finished samples in various woods that are a physical record and valuable reference for future projects. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students work with a variety of wood samples, sanders, finishes and finish application tools. Basic techniques in the use of wood finishing materials and tools will develop a clear understanding of how to produce a quality finish. CONCEPT: In this workshop we look at synergy as inspiration for contemporary making. Wood and iron bonded eons ago and were the bases of a pre-industrial building culture that was mutually supportive: a synergy. Each material remains as metaphorical anchors of culture. The essential characters of wood and metal are investigated in the studio. A range of processes from simple hand-work to digital design are explored. An ability in one area supports and opens possibilities in the creative use of new materials. Students can expect a range of specific form-making strategies, lively discussions and innovative approaches that tread the margin of art/craft. CONCEPT: The CNC (computer numerically controlled) router is known for precision and accuracy in massproduced designs. But for the creative designer and maker, it is also a powerful tool for realizing more intimate forms of self-expression. This hands-on workshop aims to demystify the CNC process and explore its artistic potential. Students are introduced to multi-axis milling for furniture and sculpture. ACTIVITIES: We view demonstrations for each technique used to accomplish step-by-step instructions on all the wood samples. Students may bring samples for current projects to develop specific finishing schedules. There is an emphasis on the safe handling and use of finishing materials. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use solid wood, plywood, veneer, mild steel sheets, bars, tubes, drawing materials and computer assisted lay-out, a variety of compound building strategies for both steel and wood, traditional joinery, steel fabrication and safe machinery practices. FACULTY: Greg Johnson is the owner of Johnson Furniture Restoration in Avon, NY. His professional finishing experience spans 40 years, from apprenticing with his father and older brothers to working for 11 years as the principal finisher for renowned furniture designer Wendell Castle. Since 2005, Johnson Furniture Restoration offers a full range of services including restoration, conservation and custom finishing. www.jfrestoration.com ACTIVITIES: We design, using traditional drawing methods and computer assisted layouts to create vessels, forms or functional objects and learn with hands-on demonstrations of techniques, presentations, lectures, informal discussions and studio work. Wood Finishing Strategies in Wood & Steel: FACULTY: Furniture maker Don Miller holds an M.F.A. in 3-D design from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is currently the Director of the Crafts/Wood program at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Designer and craftsman Donald Cope founded Athens, Georgia-based STÅLRØR in 1992. A graphic designer and industrial artist by training, Donald turned to furniture design and sculptura l metalwork to transcend limitations of print design. www.stalror.com Tuition: $975 OR Tuition + Studio Support Donation: $1175 Studio Fee: $115  Code: W1219  Enrollment Limit 10 44  andersonranch.org  970/923-3181  Tuition: $1075 OR Tuition + Studio Support Donation: $1475 Studio Fee: $155  Code: S1212  Enrollment Limit 16 [email protected] MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use wood parts and computer workstations: MasterCam and Aspire software. A limited number of stations with Rhino software will be available for use - bring a laptop with Rhino Software if you have one. Advanced CAD skills welcome, but not required. Computer skills are necessary. ACTIVITIES: We start with an overview of CAD technology, basic wood-milling operations and parts preparation. We develop and practice the skills to use the three-axis CNC router in a more creative way. We set up and complete CAD, CAM and CNC operations using the router. We explore one- and two-sided machining operations. Discussions, slide lectures, demonstrations and hands-on instruction occur at every stage. We provide feedback in individual and group settings. FACULTY: Lucien Casartelli studied woodworking and furniture design at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He is the owner of Bella Design, a cutting-edge furniture and sculpture studio that utilizes state-of-the-art technology including computer-controlled spray booths and the five-axis and three-axis robotic CNC machines. www.bella-design.com Tuition: $775 OR Tuition + Studio Support Donation: $975 Studio Fee: $95  Code: W1320  Enrollment Limit 10
