SKILL LEVEL: Open to all
CONCEPT: Build confidence in the woodshop as you
master the basic tools and techniques. Learn how to
safely choose the right wood, the right tool and the right
joint. Students with no experience in woodworking will
get a solid grounding in the field, and those who have
been away from the wood shop for a while can refresh
their skills. Either way, count on leaving inspired to tackle
new challenges in the wood shop.
CONCEPT: Acquire all the skills you need to confidently
wield the tools, techniques and materials of upholstery.
Learn the logistics of layers, from the frame up. The
real work of upholstering is on the inside, with the final
fabric like the last coat of paint. The webbing, springs
and padding are applied to create a smooth sub-structure.
By upholstering a simple chair, you develop the skills to
upholster your own designs.
CONCEPT: Small tables can be made quickly, but usually
have low perceived value. By quickly making a small table
with elegant joinery and adding some seemingly complex
decoration, value is instantly added. This exercise in
making small tables will expand your design vocabulary
and translate over to larger more complex projects.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students will handle wood,
paint and finishing products, using traditional joinery and
safe machinery practices.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Collaborating with the
instructors, students will select and bring a chair, or we
will source a chair locally for you. We excavate through
the layers, keeping some and improving the rest. Using
the appropriate tools, we build it back up and smooth on
the fabric you’ve provided.
ACTIVITIES: We learn through hands-on practice and
step-by-step skill-building exercises. Instructor demos
inspire the group and slide lectures offer personalized
guidance in the studio.
FACULTY: Jason Schneider received his M.F.A. in
Furniture Design from San Diego State University. He
was the Woodworking Program Coordinator at Anderson
Ranch for 10 years. His work has been published in many
books and magazines. He exhibits his work nationally.

ACTIVITIES: We measure for fabric, strip the chair and
make repairs. Then we begin the process of building
the layers back up and learning the requirements of
an upholstered furniture frame for future designs. We
become familiar with sewing machine operation and
stitching techniques.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Build a small table with handcut three-way miters and birdsmouth joints. Learn to cut
mortise and tenons, accurately shape pieces using a
rasp and spokeshave and learn the value of a scroll saw.
Develop a parquetry design in veneer and translate that
design to a pierced panel.
ACTIVITIES: This workshop will primarily take place at
the bench. We make simple, but accurate, jigs using the
hand saw, hand planes, and chisels. This will be followed
by using the scroll saw to develop complex patterns and
stack cut parquetry techniques.
FACULTY: Tina Ortman began Sturdy Stitching Upholstery
in 1992 and has learned something new from every piece
of furniture she has upholstered in those 23 years.

almost 30 years. He has been teaching worldwide for
the past 15. He has twice been an artist-in-residence at
Anderson Ranch. He recently received the biennial artist
award from the Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston. He
lives in Rockland, ME.
