We begin by walking through basic surface design concepts and discuss ways to find your muse. Learn how to source and translate 2-D patterns and images into both surface decoration and form. In addition to basic hard-slab construction, this workshop focuses on learning a wide range of surface techniques on greenware and bisqueware. CONCEPT: This course combines two distinct media that share sensibilities. Printmaking and ceramics have a long tradition of blending technical know-how and ideas, and each embraces experimentation in surprising ways. Artists experiment and mash both media together. This is a generous, open experience for artists interested in broadening their skills. Themes include the link between process and materials, allowing accidents to happen in the studio. CONCEPT: Making pottery with our hands requires practice, a steady rhythm of working in the studio and a persistent curiosity asking “What if?” How do we embrace the rigorous discipline and still maintain a sense of play? This workshop includes instruction in different ways of making and questioning how we make pots. We use throwing and handbuilding techniques, and fire in different kinds of kilns. Ideas and information for surface treatments and firing techniques are discussed and shared. Presentations of the artists’ work and of both contemporary and historical ceramics, compliment this hands-on experience. Inspirational Surfaces: surface design for ceramics Molly Hatch MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students work with Mishima (Japanese Slip Inlay), Sgraffitto (slip carving), rubber stamping, doodling, paper resist, sticker resist as well as the use of commercial and non-commercial underglazes on bisqueware. We use electric kilns for firing mid-range porcelain. ACTIVITIES: We make our own forms for exploring new surfaces in the mornings and afternoons. Demonstrations twice a day with time to practice and troubleshoot. Final week allows time for firing, glazing and completion of work. FACULTY: Molly Hatch received her M.F.A. in ceramics from the University of Colorado, Boulder. A full-time studio artist and designer, Molly’s artwork has been exhibited internationally and published in periodicals. Her designs range from tableware to quilting fabrics and are widely available internationally. She has partnerships with more than 15 companies from Anthropologie to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. www.mollyhatch.com MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use earthenware clays in oxidation, relief printing, laser cut rubber stamps, laser etching, stencil printing combined with hand painting, mono printing from clay slabs, decal making, and multiple firing techniques. Students utilize handbuilding, slabs and bisque tiles. ACTIVITIES: We learn through hands-on demonstrations, informal group discussions, and personal instruction. Large blocks of creative time are allotted for individual work. The group will engage in problem-solving techniques in open and encouraging discussions. This course will move between the print shop and use ceramics as a home base.
