Del Harrow, Haw Case (detail) Alleghany Meadows, Flora Camellia Ron Nagle, Door of Opportunity June 1 - 12 June 1 - 12 June 15 - 19 Digital Clay: For the Table: The Deconstructed Cup Del Harrow Andy Brayman & Alleghany Meadows SKILL LEVEL: II - IV SKILL LEVEL: II - IV SKILL LEVEL: III - IV CONCEPT: Clay is a solid form, but design is a fluid process. This workshop explores strategies and techniques for integrating computer design into the process of creating forms with clay. Del teaches us how to incorporate computer-aided design, machining and prototyping into our studio practices. These methods are tools for artists and for educators interested in building technology into ceramics or sculpture curriculums. While our focus is on specific strategies, we also investigate the wide range of practices within the broader field of digital fabrication. CONCEPT: The table is a time-honored tradition. A place to gather, experience time, break bread with friends and mark the occasions of life. This dynamic team-taught workshop focuses on making objects for the table. Explore different approaches to setting the table: traditional vs. unconventional, Eastern vs. Western, formal vs. informal. CONCEPT: This workshop focuses on the various permutations of the cup both as a physical and symbolic object for contemplation and use. The formal, cultural and ceremonial aspects of the cup are addressed. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use a range of CAD software and Computer Controlled Machines, CNC Machining and 3-D printing in tandem with more traditional, manual techniques, midrange porcelain and stoneware, including slab building, slip casting and plaster mold making. Our goal is to develop our own set of individual, “hybrid” techniques. ACTIVITIES: We engage in daily demonstration, handson activities and individual discussions. computer-aided design approaches to making ACTIVITIES: We engage in daily demonstrations, slide lectures and work in the studio. FACULTY: Del Harrow is an Assistant Professor of Art at Colorado State University. He has lectured at the University of Colorado, Alfred University and Harvard University.
