The Key for School Leaders
An Essential Guide to Academy Conversion

Conversion process

The following section provides a timeline of the stages of academy conversion from the point of receiving an academy order . In this case , the actual dates were derived from a small group of SBM practitioners whose schools converted in six months .
Conversion timeframes vary , particularly where academisation takes place under the direction of the regional schools commissioner or local authority , so the dates given here provide more of an approximate time value against particular areas of activity , and are offered on an example basis .
The SBM practitioners contributing to this timeline have shared their optimum execution and leadtimes for particular activities , based on experience , but this timeline is by no means prescriptive . The conversion process is complex with a high number of steps and the timeline merely shows these in a sequential order , and may be subject to change depending upon whether a school is proposing to become part of a MAT , or a standalone academy , or is being required to join an established MAT .
Standing items throughout the conversion
• Land questionnaire
• Articles of association
• Funding agreement
• Land transfer / lease
• Composition of board / trustees ( unless joining an established MAT )
• Commercial transfer agreement ( CTA ) –
• Tribunal compensation
• Outstanding commitments
• Staff
• Assets gifted to the academy
• Contracts
• SLA provision to other schools
• Admissions
