The power of two hearts

Plug-in hybrids have huge potential when used correctly
Hybrids are vehicles that run both a combustion engine and an electric motor , equipped with a tank and a battery . You can either use conventional fuels or travel fully electrically for a short range . In sporty versions , both systems combined can provide propulsion .
In Germany , sales are booming because these passenger cars are classified for tax purposes in a similar way as fully electric vehicles , the poster boys of automotive progress . But surely aren ’ t vehicles that have to drag both a combustion engine and an e-drive around flawed from the
outset ? The consensus of the National Platform Future of Mobility ( NPM ) experts is “ Absolutely not .” In a new study , they demonstrate that these best-of-both-worlds vehicles have the power of empowering electromobility .
It all depends on the right balance between the gas pump and the charging connector . It makes no sense if the hybrid cannot draw upon the strengths of its electrical drive and is only powered by fossil fuels . On the other hand , when
they are driven electrically through cities and on short journeys , plug-in hybrids – with forecasts showing there will be 3 million on the road by 2030 – can save the equivalent of 2.9 million metric tons of carbon emissions per year . And all that without the
uncertainties of range and charging infrastructure . Along with the advantages already existing today , the study also illustrates possibilities for further improvements to hybrid technology .

Who reads user manuals ?
In the case of the oldest working computer in the world , the Zuse Z4 , it ’ s worth taking a look . It explains the long-unknown functionality of the computer , which consists of 2,200 relays and an electromechanical memory that can hold a proud 64 numbers .
At the ETH Zurich Swiss Federal Institute of Technology , a manual has now been discovered in a former employee ’ s archives . Today , the pioneering machine is at the Deutsches Museum in Munich .

Nezzy 2 goes for a swim
Sometimes reality catches up with the scheduled event . Just a moment ago , we were sitting on the shore of a quarry lake in Bremerhaven , Lower Saxony , interviewing wind energy pioneer Sönke Siegfriedsen ( see page 16 ), yet his unique power plant presented here is already swimming in the Baltic Sea .
Nezzy 2 is a floater , a floating wind turbine . Its characteristic feature , apart from the lack of a solid foundation , is the fact that it has two heads . The 18-meter tall wind turbine on a scale of 1:10 has now moved from the quarry lake to the Bay of Greifswald off the German Baltic coast . Here , it is exposed to the harsh reality of wind and waves . However , electricity is not yet being generated in this test phase , the builders for the German energy provider EnBW energy reveal .
