We ’ d travelled “ the outer circle ” of the USA in 1996-9 in our VW Westfalia , Jena ( Orange route 1 ) and our Class C RV , Bailey ( Red Route 2 ). In August 2016 we set off on a new adventure in our 20-yr old Winnebago called VB , Venture Bear ( Blue route 3 ).
This time we will explore the vast rural interior . We ’ ll search out public art & work as consultants for art as economic development . August was to be ‘ get to know our way around things again ’ plus rearranging everything inside and out numerous time , an ongoing exercise .
I hardly looked at my sketchbook . We drove through beautiful parts of Maryland , Ohio and Iowa and captured almost nothing of it . But after a while I picked up the tempo . Not all the sketches are great , but it was fun doing it and they are a marvellous reminder of our journey . And that ’ s the point .
