GRASSROOTS ADVOCACY & ENGAGEMENT AWO also mobilized members to make the case for our industry directly before policymakers in Congress, the Administration, state legislatures, and federal and state regulatory agencies. In 2017, AWO planned and executed the most productive Barge-In in the association’s history, bringing together more than 150 members from 85 member companies to conduct almost 250 visits with Members of Congress and staff, and sponsored 15 tugboat/towboat tours to give lawmakers an up-close education on our industry. AWO used these opportunities to educate lawmakers on the contributions of the tugboat, towboat and barge industry to our nation and the importance of advancing and maintaining policies that enable the industry to thrive. AWO also brought members together with U.S. Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers field commanders, conducting more than 50 meetings to build relationships with these agency officials and promote safe, secure and efficient marine transportation. 2017 ANNUAL REPORT DELIVERING VALUE 13 ■
