MAKING THE CASE: Industry Value to the Nation AWO is proud to work on members’ behalf to tell the story of the American tugboat, towboat and barge industry’s role in driving the U.S. economy, protecting the environment, and supporting homeland security. In 2017, AWO finalized and launched the comprehensive roll-out of the PricewaterhouseCoopers study, Economic Contribution of the U.S. Tugboat, Towboat and Barge Industry, conducted in partnership with the U.S. Maritime Administration. AWO used the study to produce new educational materials, secure positive media coverage, and work with members to make a compelling case to policymakers, the media and the public highlighting the economic and environmental value of our industry, which includes: ■ Supporting over 300,000 jobs nationwide – including 38,000 family-wage crew positions on board industry vessels; ■ Contributing more than $33 billion to U.S. gross domestic product each year; ■ Moving over 760 million tons annually of vital commodities including agricultural products, petroleum, chemicals, coal, forest products and containerized freight; and, ■ Functioning as the safest, most environmentally friendly and most efficient mode of cargo transportation. ■ 12 THE AMERICAN WATERWAYS OPERATORS
