received 1,526 tons of bombs to deal
with, and WWII was shortened by a

It is apparent that great good fortune
smiled upon me in my flying career. It
was not a long flying career, but it was an
active one. The important thing is the
record of those who gave something to
save their fellow citizens’ freedom, their
homes, their families, their way of life,
their country. They gave something all

Col. James B. Morehead is the author of a book
recounting his World War II experience, titled
In My Sights: The Memoir of a P-40
ACE. This article is adapted from his memoir
as well as remarks from his speech at the
American Veterans Center’s 2010 Conference.
It was put together in collaboration with close
friend, Leon Delisle.
Col. Morehead passed away on March 11, 2012
at the age of 95. We are grateful to have known
him, one of the great heroes of the darkest periods
of the Second World War.
