10th Anniversary – 2005-2015
Memorial Day - our military’s most sacred holiday - traces its history to the
years following the Civil War. Americans, both North and South, laid flowers
on graves, held solemn ceremonies, and began traditions of parades in towns
across the reunited country.

During World War II, the Memorial Day tradition of a parade in our nation’s capital - Washington, DC - faded
away. Six decades later, thanks to the support of thousands of patriotic Americans like you, the American
Veterans Center & World War II Veterans Committee revived the tradition, launching the National Memorial
Day Parade along Constitution Avenue, from the National Archives past the White House.
A truly National Memorial Day Parade, it is now the largest Memorial Day event in the nation, drawing more
than 300,000 spectators and televised in more than 100 million homes across the country and military bases
and U.S. Navy ships around the world. A moving timeline of American history, the parade is a family friendly
and fitting tribute to those who have served - and sacrificed - to defend our freedoms.
