second or third day we were allowed
to go into town and of course the
first place we wanted to get to was
the pub. At the pub we tried to drink
up all the beer they had before we
went back to our quarters that night.
Many of us were blackout drunk. We
couldn’t show any light, or strike even
a match because we were fearful of
the Germans overhead. We could
hear them dropping bombs elsewhere
in the area. But at about two in the
morning, nature called and we had to
go. We knew we had a latrine outside,
but trying to find an exit to those huts
was very difficult in the dark. We knew
we were somewhere near the door, but
it was time to relieve ourselves. So we
relieved ourselves near the first bunk
that we hit and that just happened to
