Double Standards:

Battle of the sexes

By Trevell Shupe

Imagine yourself in the hospital, looking into the nursery trying to find your brand new baby boy in the jungle of cribs. What’s the first thing you look for? A blue blanket? Well duh, he’s a boy! But why does a color define the sex of a baby? Now fast forward 9 years. Your little guy just asked you if he could start taking dance classes at the local studio, but you tell him no because dancing is for girls. He ends up joining a little league baseball team be- cause he now be- lieves boys are sup-posed to play sports. He’s not even 10 years old yet, and double standards are already controlling his life. These are just small examples of how prominent double Standards are in our life from the day we are born

and move on. No matter where you look, you will see the effects of double standards.

Men vs. Women is one of the most controversial examples of double standards. For centuries, women have been the easiest target. As stated before, it starts early. Growing up, most girls

are taught that they have to act like young ladies, while only guys can pass gas. But the second a girl does the same, it’s disgusting. As they move into teens however, they become a bit more serious. For instance, most teens end up dating at some point, and that goes

hand in hand with double standards. One example being as simple as the boy is supposed to ask the girl out; not the other way around. Standards become even more serious when sex comes into play. A teen boy can date as many girls as he wants and is praised by his friends for it, but if a girl decided to do

to the day we die.

What exactly are double standards? Well, they are the little unwritten rules that say it’s ok for someone to do or act a certain way, but if someone else was to do the same, it wouldn’t be ok. The sad part is most of us don't even realize or acknowledge that they exist. We just accept them
