American Latino Interview with Alquimia Tequila’s President and CEO, Dr. Adolfo Murillo: AL: Can you tell us how a US Optometrist got started in the tequila business? Dr. M: I had the opportunity 20 years ago to take over the running of our family ranch in Jalisco, Mexico. This ranch has been in our family for 3 generations, and we did not want to let it go. My family and I committed to make it productive, and then to use the ranch to teach others how to do the same. We decided to grow agave, and to do it organically in order to completely eliminate the use of chemical fertilizers and toxic pesticides and weed-killers. These toxic chemicals are devastating to the soil, the health of the farmworkers, the consumers, and the environment in general. AL: What was the reaction from area growers? Dr. M: At first they all told us we couldn’t do it, that agave would not grow in our area, and especially that we would not be able to do it The World’s Top Rated ORGANIC TEQUILA USDA Certified 100% Organic Gold Medal Winner 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 & 2012 San Francisco World Spirits Competition www.T AMERICAN LATINO MAGAZINE • BRINGING PEOPLE, BUSINESS AND CULTURE TOGETHER LATINOSONLINE.COM
