checklist for a safe soirée
■ A few weeks before the
party, make any minor
home repairs that you’ve
been putting off: Secure
loose railings and banis-
ters; check for loose or
uneven floorboards, which
could be tripping hazards;
and ensure all bathroom
plumbing is running
smoothly. ■ Tuck away valuables
and breakable items
behind locked doors.
Mark off-limits areas
with signs.
■ Check that smoke
and carbon monoxide
detectors are working
properly. ■ Even with thorough
planning and safety
measures, accidents can
still happen. And you
don’t want to be on the
hook if you’re found
legally responsible for
damages or injuries
sustained at your party.

■ Make sure exterior
lights function and add
additional walkway
lighting for dark winter
evenings.
■ Remove icicles from
eavestroughs and roof to
avoid potentially danger-
ous falling ice.
■ Clear sidewalks of snow
and spread salt on your
driveway, walkways and
all outdoor steps. Apply
salt about an hour before
guests arrive to allow it to
break up any ice.
