Flying South I enjoyed reading “A Field Guide to Snowbirding” (fall 2016). As snowbirders, we’ve found these strategies also work quite well: Carry more than one credit card. Designate an emergency contact at home—someone you can call or text if you have a problem and have limited access to email. We found this especially helpful when we needed help outside of office hours in Alberta. Our bank recommended that we give them a signed letter permitting them to follow the directions of our emergency contact— which happened more than once during the year in which we travelled. Don’t leave home without setting up online banking. When you have internet access while abroad, check your account activity for any suspicious charges. We also set up automatic payments for our credit cards, since we tend to pay for everything with those cards. L. White, GRIMSHAW Car Care Events Thank you to all members who attended our fall Car Care events in Red Deer, Calgary and Edmonton. Corrections and Clarifications “Mexico’s Best Beach Towns” ( fall 2016) featured an incorrect exchange rate: One Canadian dollar is approximately 14.5 Mexican pesos. (Printed exchange rates are approximate as they fluctuate daily.) In “A Field Guide to Snowbirding” ( fall 2016) we noted the number of days Albertans can be out of the province to remain eligible for Alberta Health coverage. As that number may vary depending on where you’re are travelling, Albertans planning to be out of the province for extended periods should check with Alberta Health each year before leaving. AMA Inner Circle: Marijuana & Driving As the federal government moves to decriminalize marijuana for recreational use, we asked members how they think this move will affect road safety in our province. 79% are somewhat concerned or very concerned about driver performance if marijuana is decriminalized 86% 78% somewhat or strongly support changing the Criminal Code to detect drugs in drivers somewhat support or strongly support roadside saliva testing for marijuana To learn more about marijuana and driving—and what AMA is doing about it—turn to page 21.
