We’ve been going to
Gold eye
lake, and the area west of
nordegg, for more than 40
years. the first campground
we stayed at was thomp-
son creek Provincial Recre-
ation area. that was in 1974
and we were with our 3.5- and
1.5-year-old boys. turning the
clock ahead, our grandchil-
dren went hiking there just
last weekend. i wrote a poem
about our special place.
Gold Eye Lake
Gold Eye Lake campground becomes
A summer haven for us.
Our family cherishes
The tranquility found thus.
Nestled in the foothills
Of the Rocky Mountains,
It is a place for romance
And a place for the heart to dance.
It is a place for creativity
For our young granddaughters
One summer day activity
Is making houses out of moss.

A trip to Nordegg in the 1970s
As time goes by big sister begins
To get under little sister’s skin
Wee sis thinks of a chance to take—
At the right time shoves her in the lake!
We try to make up the difference
And learn to chop wood for a fire
To warm up ourselves hence;
As we roast marshmallows, we tire.
While still sitting around the fire,
Ah! What is that sound we hear?
‘Tis the haunting sound of a loon;
These calls make this place so dear!

Corre Ction:
Keen-eyed aMa members pointed
out that in “castle Hopping: scotland”
(Summer 2018), we misidentified two
landmarks. the photo labeled eilean
donan castle was actually dunnottar
castle, and vice-versa. We regret the error,
and thank you for reading so closely!

A LIFE

I have fond memories of
AMA’s School Safety Patrol.
In the late 1950s, I was
a patroller at Vincent
Massey School in Calgary,
and represented the school
at the Calgary Stampede
parade. I ended up working
for AMA—until 1971, when
I joined the Calgary Police
Service (CPS). During my
time there, I spent three
years teaching traffic safety.
I trained school patrols,
hosted school patrol rallies
at the Palace Theatre, and
was on the Safety Roundup
TV show. I again marched
in the Stampede parade, this
time as a police officer. My
experience with the School
Safety Patrol came full
circle. —Verne F., CALGARY
