IT sEEms LIkE onLy yEsTERdAy that it happened . May 3rd started out as a normal Tuesday . By noon , a shift in the wind would result in us staring down Canada ’ s worst ever natural disaster . 88,000 people were forced to leave their homes as fire raced through hectare after hectare of land .
As one of Alberta ’ s largest organizations , the tragedy hit close to home . We not only have a centre in Fort McMurray , but also tens of thousands of members and insureds . Acting on your behalf , we did what we could to ensure their safety and provide whatever support and comfort we could , from towing stranded motorists to rapidly deploying our Insurance Claims team .
Now almost six months later , we look back . Clean-up and rebuilding efforts are underway and the community is slowly finding a new normal . Most of our employees have returned to Fort McMurray and the strength and resilience of the entire city is admirable .
At the end of the day , this was yet another challenge for our province in what has felt like a series of challenges . AMA has been around for a long time — 90 years and counting — and over those years , we have seen many highs and lows , but the past 18 months have been trying to say the least . The collapse of oil prices , the subsequent loss of jobs and low levels of consumer confidence have left many of us feeling concerned .
And yet through it all , one basic fact continues to hold true : AMA and Albertans are strong . We suffer , but when we do , we dig deep and muster the strength , courage and will
to move forward ; to rebuild — better and stronger . Despite a tough year , AMA continues to be a very strong organization .
While all of these challenges have left a significant mark on us , they have also done something else : They ’ ve made us wiser , more resilient and brought us closer together . This summer , I travelled throughout Alberta , meeting employees and members , many of whom , although struggling themselves , continue to remain optimistic and hopeful for the future , giving of themselves to take care of one another and the communities around them . After that trip I am more confident than ever that we will come out the other side of this even stronger as a province .
I am so proud of this organization , the people who work here and our members who truly are practically family . Because you care , pitch in , and believe deeply that the well-being of your neighbours matters , you help build a province that can withstand these trying times .
There is a lot of uncertainty and fear in the world these days — and plenty of reasons to worry . But when you come through what we as Albertans have come through , you recognize that at the end of the day , our desire to take care of one another and protect the things that matter most is really all that matters . # AlbertaStrong
