Alzar School is a fully accredited semester school for highly motivated sophomores and juniors . Our mission is to build leaders who positively impact the world . We accomplish our mission through a rigorous academic program , outdoor adventure , and a six-week cultural exchange in Chile .
Accreditation
Alzar School is fully accredited by the Northwest Accreditation Commission and Cognia ( formerly AdvancEd ). We are members of the National Association of Independent Schools ( NAIS ), the Northwest Association of Independent Schools , The Association of Boarding Schools ( TABS ), and the Semester Schools Network . Our CEEB code is 130096 .
Academics
Alzar School students take seven courses for a total of 3.5 credits per semester : math , science , history , English , Spanish , Capstone Leadership , and Outdoor Adventure Activity ( PE ). We work with many sending schools , including block , trimester , IB , and others . Teachers engage students by connecting content to their lives and the places in which we travel and learn .
Outdoor Adventure and Cultural Exchange
Students focus on developing technical proficiency in multi day backpacking and whitewater rafting and kayaking . Students complete training in Wilderness First Aid and Swiftwater Awareness during their semester . In a semester , students complete four major expeditions ( 5-7 days in length each ). In both fall and spring semesters , students spend 6-7 weeks in Patagonia , Chile , for both expedition and studies components .
