Diversity , Equity , and Inclusion ( DEI ) & Academics :

Lastly , Alzar School students engage with identity and diverse perspectives through Cultural Exchange , one of our Six Foundations . This occurs all semester as we bring together 40-48 students from all over the United States , Chile , and abroad . Additionally , students spend between six and seven weeks in Chile each semester . The extended visit to Chile includes time for academics and expeditions , as well as frequent cultural activities like grocery shopping in a local store , volunteering at a recycling center , interacting with our Chilean staff , or kayaking with local Chilean teens . This experience pushes students outside of their comfort zone , as they try speaking Spanish , tasting new foods , and experiencing day to day life in a new culture . No previous Spanish-speaking experience is required and students are encouraged to engage in the language-learning process at their individual level .

Athletics and Fitness :

Alzar School works to instill the value of lifetime fitness in our students . Beyond multi-day expeditions , students regularly participate in a number of outdoor and non-competitive athletic endeavors . These may include : backpacking , kayaking , canoeing , alpine and nordic skiing , snowboarding , cross-country running , general fitness and training , hiking , soccer , ultimate frisbee , spike ball , and rock climbing . These activities are a great way to stay in shape for competitive sports at students ’ sending schools . Additionally , all students receive a semester credit for a PE elective titled “ Outdoor Adventure Activity ( PE )”, which occurs three times a week .

Art at Alzar School :

At this time , Alzar School does not offer art , music , or dance classes . However , students are encouraged to practice their preferred mediums as time permits . From guitar and ukulele to photography and sketching , students can document their experience artistically and connect with their peers in the community . Many students opt to practice art skills during the day , on expedition , or on weekends .
