We’ve Come A Long Way Since its founding, National University of Health Sciences (NUHS) has been the “fountainhead” for progressive, evidence-directed edu- cation. This tenet not only applies to its curriculum and research, but to the inclusion of groups not typically allowed (early on) to matriculate in health care institutions. Women have always been an important part to the foundation of National as well as chiroprac- tic in the United States. As the 1907 photograph shows, National’s second graduating class was made up of entirely women. The current enrollment at NUHS is 59 percent female, and the cur- riculum includes training that allows all graduates to be competent in women’s health management. Additionally, DC licensure in Illinois has the unique distinction, according to the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards (FCLB), of having Minora Paxson, DC , obtain the first license here. I’m reminded of a female patient of mine who recently passed away and happened to be a NUHS alum from the early 1950s. She graduated, got married and began a family, but she never practiced. During our discussions I got up the nerve and asked why she never did so. With a pained look she said that it was very difficult to get an associateship or to start your own practice as a woman during that era. The business climate was antagonistic toward entrepreneurial women, and the only socially acceptable healthcare professionals were nurses. Thankfully times have changed. Please join us during Homecoming this year, as our female colleagues educate us in diverse aspects of conservative, mainstream healthcare that are uniquely chiropractic. The true meaning of Esse Quam Videri (to be, rather than to seem) distinctly applies to all of our alumni, but during Homecoming, let us remember that female healthcare providers have always had to prove themselves no matter the discipline. See you at Homecoming! Darren D. Hancock, DC, DACBSP National University of Health Sciences will be hosting its Homecoming 2018 celebration, June 21-23, at the Lombard campus!
