NUHS Hosted Healthy Kids Open House May 13

Faculty and Students Join in Passion for

Natural Medicine

Students at National University have the opportunity to explore their chosen path in natural health care both in and out of the classroom; and in collaboration with NUHS faculty, they can share that passion with others through presentations and research.

Clinic Chair and Student Share Acupuncture’s Benefits

Chair of Clinical Practice Manuel Duarte, DC, MSAc, and 10th trimester intern Giulio Germano recently shared the benefits of acupuncture in the treatment of PTSD with veterans at the DuPage County Vet Center. The center hosts monthly events for veterans, and in February, the program featured two yoga classes, two iRest meditation classes, and the NUHS informational talk about the use of acupuncture as an adjunct to therapy. Intern Germano explained how acupuncture works, how it has been proven to assist in treating PTSD, and how it can help relieve chronic pain as a result of PTSD. Dr. Duarte followed up with a discussion of the treatments and services of the NUHS Veterans Clinic (sponsored by China-Gel). “Acupuncture has the potential to positively affect physical, cognitive and emotional responses with few potential side effects,” he said.

Phytoestrogen Research Earns Scholarship for ND Student

Allison Wills, a third year naturopathic medicine student, earned a $500 second place scholarship for a research review entitled “Phytoestrogens: Varying Effects Across a Lifespan,” co-authored with Assistant Dean of Naturopathic Medicine Fraser Smith, MATD, ND. The review was also published in ND News & Review and on NDNR.com. Wills, who has a strong passion for the subject of reproductive health and dermatology, tackled the controversial subject of whether phytoestrogens are health foods or toxins. Her review discussed how the health effects of phytoestrogens can vary depending on genetics and the various stages of a woman’s life, and why the topic is so divisive. Read More

Dean Inspires Long Term Interest in Research

National University’s emphasis on evidence-based research plays an important role in every student’s time at the university. For some, it lasts way beyond their studies. Prior to graduation, Matthew Budavich (NUHS ’16) took a job as a research assistant working with Gregory Cramer, DC, PhD, dean of research. Dr. Budavich became so inspired with new research that he continued to work with Dr. Cramer as a research fellow for the remainder of his time on campus, and returned after graduation to complete the project. “The research I conducted excited me for the profession and it gave me a passion for the ‘why’ and ’how’ of what we do as chiropractors,” says Dr. Budavich.
