Alumna Touts the World of Opportunities
National University Makes Possible
An international career in chiropractic governance did not occur to Kristin (Hurtgen)
Grace, ‘89, DC, DACBR, when she entered National College of Chiropractic (NCC)
in the 1980s. Upon returning to her alma mater on May 8, she reminisced about how
former president Dr. Joseph Janse influenced her path.
“Dr. Janse was such a unique individual and had such great presence whenever
he entered a room,” she recalled. Dr. Grace visited the Lombard campus following
her presentation of the 29th Annual Joseph Janse Lecture at the Federation of
Chiropractic Licensing Boards (FCLB) 93rd Annual Educational Congress May 2 - 5
in Mission Bay, Calif.
“It was an absolute honor to present in the lecture series named for him,” Dr. Grace
said. “I recall that day in Dr. Janse’s office, marveling at the artifacts he displayed from across the globe and
realized then that the profession had such enormous potential and there were opportunities to serve on a global
scale.”Once practicing, she understood the quality of her National education and, through her governance career,
the importance of its accreditation status and learning from outstanding teachers.
Dr. Grace has held academic positions in the U.S., New Zealand and the UK. Of late, her professional focus has been
on education, accreditation, governance and regulation within the chiropractic profession. She is Chair of the New
Zealand Chiropractic Board, Chair of the Council on Chiropractic Education Australasia (CCEA) and Vice President
of the International Chiropractic Regulatory Society (ICRS).
Dynamic Duo: Meet Drs. Nate and Shannon McKee
T he coincidence of being in the same place at the same time started the relationship
for Nate McKee, DC, ’16 and Shannon McKee, DC, ’14 and MSAc,’15, who met while
students at National University of Health Sciences.
While pursuing their degrees, both developed lasting connections with their
instructors by becoming leaders within their cohorts. Shannon was honored with
the role of Clinical Sciences Fellow. Nate became a Teaching Assistant and tutor
for several anatomy and E & M courses. Serving in these capacities significantly
influenced and shaped them into the health care professionals they are today.
Shannon was inspired to further her education by enrolling in the MSAc program
to provide her patients with another level of care. This also allowed her to be at NUHS while Nate completed his
education. Since graduation, Nate has expanded his scope of practice to become a Certified Chiropractic Sports
Physician, and certified in the Cox Technician 2016, they opened Chiropractic Unlimited, in Davison, Mich.
Nate’s focus is on the general population, while incorporating the skillsets from the certifications he acquired.
Shannon sees a wide range of patients, primarily for pain management and fertility/pregnancy treatment with
acupuncture.
