Municipal theaters are examples of European architecture in Brazil
•
18th and 20th Century Churches:
ü Sao Bento Monastery in Olinda built in 1745à Dark and lined in gold foil
ü The Cathedral in Brasilia designed in 1960 à Bright inside, built with white
walls, in a variety of shapes
IDEA: Use the Form Key to
observe and describe the two
churches. Use the Change
Key to help students discover
how architecture here
changed. Create a Venn
Diagram to present
differences and similarities.

Brazil’s capital city: The architecture of the city is very futuristic. The urban planner
Lucio Costa designed the city in the shape of a plane. Everything is different in Brasilia:
the streets are spacious with few intersections and barely any pedestrians. The concepts
of distance, volume and shape are all different; things emerge both distant and near. All
of the buildings were designed by the famous architect Oscar Niemeyer.
IDEA: Use a picture of Brasilia that shows its special architecture. Apply the
Thinking Routine See-Think-Wonder. Then encourage students to pretend they are
architects and they will present in a diagram the city of Brasilia. Encourage them to
draw the city in a blank paper using the What is Missing Thinking Routine.
Complete the activity using the Headline Thinking Routine.
