Development Matters
IMPORTANT NOTE:
This material supports practitioners in implementing the
requirements of the early years developmental milestones
EYFS = Early years Foundation Stage (Birth to five)
Children develop quickly in the early years, and
early years practitioners aim to do all they can to
help children have the best possible start in life.
Children have a right, spelled out in the United
Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child,
to provision which enables them to develop their
personalities, talents and abilities irrespective of
ethnicity, culture or religion, home language, family
background, learning difficulties, disabilities or
gender. This guidance helps adults to understand
and support each individual child’s development
pathway. Other guidance is provided
at
www.foundationyears.org.uk. The EYFS statutory
framework is available on the Foundation Years
website as well as the Department for Education
website:

Edu1st VESS understands the importance
of having a clear developmental rout map
for teachers to be able to observe, assess,
plan and act according to each child’s
developmental needs.
The following guideline is a careful craft
by Edu1st team, based on the Curriculum
Guidance for the EYFS from UK
Department of Education ( who grants
permission to use, reproduce and edit this
document) and the inspiration from the
New Zealand’s Ministry of Education The
Whariki Early Childhood Curriculum and
the Florida State Early learning Standards
from birth to age 5.
Edu1st VESS Curriculum identifies that
there is a wide difference in the level and
timing of children’s developmental growth.
Each child learns at his/her own way, pace
and time.
The standards are then set by ages with
the clear understanding that this is more a
continuum line rather than a set of
standards per age.
