Compass Points
Objectives:
-
Consider an idea from different angles.
-
To help learners flesh out an idea or proposition and eventually evaluate it.
COMPASS POINTS
Considering the idea, question, or proposition before
you:
PURPOSE
•
E = Excitements: What excites you about this idea?
What’s the upside?
•
W = Worries: What do you find worrisome about
this idea? What’s the downside?
N = Needs: What else do you need to know or find
out about this idea?
S = Stance, Steps, or Suggestions: What is your
current stance or opinion on the idea? What should
your next step be in your evaluation of this idea?
What suggestions do you have at this point?
•
Format for learners to consider an idea from
different angles
Issues are explored from multiple perspectives
and areas are identified where more
information is needed helping learners avoid
rushing to judgment
Encourages a habit of mind of considering
multiple perspectives of a situation or opinion
instead of sticking oneself in only one point of
view, and generally defending it without
considering a broader view of possibilities.
Tips:
•
•
Model first.
The routine needs to be modeled with the whole group initially with responses
recorded for the entire class to see. This enables learners to build on each other’s
ideas.
• You might record responses using the directions of a compass to provide a visual
anchor.
Habits of mind: Connect, consider perspectives, manage impulsivity, and reflect to improve.
