10 Forests cover 12% of Chile´s surface. The production of wood makes up 10% of the country’s exports. Chile has one of the most important fishing sectors in South America. The main species are sardines, mackerel, hake, anchovies and lobster. The fishing industry processes a large part of the production into flour, oil and preserves. Mining Chile has one of the largest copper deposits ever known and is one of the main world exporters of this metal. Chile also has important deposits of nitrates, iodine, sulfur and coal, and also extracts silver, gold, manganese and molybdenum. Industry The industrial sector contributes almost 20% of Chile´s yearly production and occupies approximately 27% of the active population. The industry is based mainly on the refining and processing of its mineral, agricultural and forest resources. The greatest part of the national industry is concentrated around Santiago and Valparaiso; another important industrial center is Concepción.
