Wheel of Wonder: What can I make by using coal? Provide young infants with charcoals and let
them touch and smell. Take pictures as evidence of their sense. Wonder with the babies what can you
make with this material. Using a blank paper explore and discover.
Toddlers and 2’s:
X Routine: Use certain raw materials like a rock and encourage young children to carefully observe,
make connections and descriptions. Ask them, how does it look like? Feels like? Sounds like? What
do you want to know about this rock?
Wheel of Wonder: Coal is another raw material. Connect this material with artists that use charcoals
for their artwork. First, let them wonder and explore what we can do with this material using the
Wheel of Wonder Thinking Routine. Extend this science activity with an art activity. Using charcoals
students can create their own artwork. Select a topic or have children select something to draw about
and apply the What Is Missing Thinking Routine. Give them a blank paper and ask them “What is
missing here?” Let children guide their drawing. Complete with the Headline Thinking Routine. Ask
them if we were about to write a headline for this drawing that captures the most important aspect of it
what would that headline be?
Beginning/Middle/End and Timeline: From raw materials to us and back is great provoker of
sequencing events. We strongly suggest the use of the Thinking Routine and the Concept Map to make
the change visible. For example, you can create a big chart of Beginning/Middle/End and you can
