With books and different resources, promote that the children study what an
astronaut suit must have so that they later design one and make it.
•
Connect/extend/challenge: Explore what they previously know about the needs in an
astronaut suit. Search in books, on the internet and any
other resource that provides information about what an
astronaut suit has and why. Elaborate on what was
learned (Extension), then, promote a discussion on the
questions that they still have. If the idea is to make one
astronaut suit for each child, what could be included in
order to improve it; how would they design it, what new
things would you add or remove?
It is important that this phase allows for time to think,
design, explore, and share the different ideas.
It is possible that it could be complicated for certain children to be able to express their ideas
verbally. That is why art and concrete objects acquire great value. Remember to promote other
means of communication different from the verbal one.
Diagrams and artifacts are always welcome in this type of group work.
