The Elaboration Game: Explore the properties of air. Use pictures of airplanes or a
video that shows the takeoff of an airplane. Where is the airplane? Create a paper airplane
and fly it. It is important to make learning visible. Observe, Describe, Elaborate, Add and
Repeat Process. How the airplane flies? Why air is important?
Color/Shapes/Lines: Learn about the basic properties of light by exploring size and
shape of shadows. Help your students to meet their shadows. Young children are usually
amazed when they first encounter their own shadows! Sometimes children will notice
these themselves, but often they will need to be introduced to their shadows and the
language of shadows by us. Extend with the Thinking Routine. What is the color of your
shadow? Find the shape and the line.
Look 3X2 and/or See/Think/Wonder: Experience reflection using mirrors. Mirrors
offer their own brand of excitement. When children are new to mirrors it takes some time
for them to realize who it is they are seeing. Encourage your students to look at
themselves in the mirror to experience reflection. Very young children benefit from many
experiences with mirrors in order to get a sense of what a mirror can do, and the
description can help them to connect language with what they see. These early
experiences with mirrors will provide a major foundation for later investigations into
reflection.
