2. Activities for 1&2’s
•
What is Missing: A routine to promote careful observations. Present two different devices or
items but with the same or similar use. For example, an i-pad and computer, microwave and
oven, cell phone and wall phone. Encourage your child to carefully observe, describe and
identify what is missing from one device or item to the other.
•
I Used to Think…But Now I Think: This Thinking Routine helps children to reflect on how
and why our thinking has changed. Present an object or an item and ask them what they think
about its design. Then try to decorate and/or redesign. Try to make it more attractive to their
eyes. What we think now about this item? How design affects an item? If it’s hard to find an
item use for example a simple birthday or a book. How can we decorate, add illustrations,
change its design to look more attractive? Be imaginative!
•
Connect-Extend-Challenge: This Thinking Routine helps to connect new ideas to prior
knowledge. Explore a technological device and learn more about its use and effectiveness. Start
with the connections of what they already know. Let them explore and use the device or item
and extend their knowledge. What is still challenging for them? What is the main use? How it
helps us? What about other uses? Can I use it in a different way? How effective is? Model the
language of thinking!
