“According to Jacqueline Eccles’ Expectancy-Value theory, the effort someone puts into
a task is equal to how much they want to achieve it multiplied by how much they expect to
achieve it. ‘Multiplied’ is the key – since if either figure is zero (zero desire/value or zero
expectancy) then the effort will also be zero, regardless of the other factor (since anything
multiplied by zero is zero).”
