7 Measurement and Numeracy: Development occurs through three modes of thought through numbers and measurement: • • • Manipulatives— working with tangible objects to arrive at conclusions or answers Mental imaging—using a mental image to represent or quantify measurement Abstract imaging – use abstract thought to process numerical analysis without the help of mental images (mental math) Broaden their understanding of mathematics through the following areas of development: • • • • • • • • • Counting skills Concepts of sequence and numerical order Dimensions Numerical relationships Symbols Calculations-- based on collecting data from the environment and using logic Quantity Volume Weight Citizenship and emotional development: What is our responsibility in the animal kingdom? How do we influence each species and in which order? In this domain we are focusing on teaching children the Responsibility Key and the Causation Key.
