72 One of the greatest challenges teachers face is connecting a field of study with another to achieve an interdisciplinary approach. To do this, VESS teachers need to find threads that associate issues that are apparently disconnected. Another great challenge they face is finding balance, finding ways to promote in their students the equilibrium to respect the priorities we all have as individuals. VESS understands the need to facilitate the teachers’ achievement of these goals, and recognizes that for learning to be meaningful, it must somehow be connected with the essence of each one of us. To VESS, there are six essential areas that human beings want to understand: Understanding of self, physical body and personal meaning • We all seek a meaningful life • We have the need to understand who we are, our beliefs, values and our physical and mental potential. • We have the need to understand the different roles we have within our families, communities and cultures. • Knowing who we are is fundamental to achieving our physical and mental potential. Understanding Creativity and Innovation • Throughout history, human beings have reinvented themselves to survive. • In recent years the speed of changes, new discoveries, and technologies has shaped our lives, economy and environment. • We must value the importance of personal creativity and use proactivity and innovation. Understanding our connection to the natural world and how to share the planet • We are sharing the planet with other creatures and living things • We are sharing the planet with other creatures and leaving things.
