“The Raven Smiled”
Lorraine Leckie & Pavel Cingl
By Johnny Spice
“The Raven Smiled,” by Lorraine Leckie & Pavel Cingl sounds like
the kind of music coming from the dungeons of a medieval castle
dropped in the middle of Nashville. At time’s it’s moody and
brooding but the violin just brings out this vibe that stands out.
From the opening number, “The Man That Walks In The Rain,” to
the album closing title track, Lorraine Leckie & Pavel Cingl (with
Lisa Zwier on percussion and backing vocals) create a soundscape
that is intimate, yet never sounds sparse.
Recorded in Prague, as you sit and listen, you feel like you’re
transformed into the room with them, with one lone candle setting
the mood.
Every song on this record is a standout, but my personal favorite is,
“Climb Ya Like A Mountain,” the second the music starts it just
pulls you in.
Also, “Awake,” is a song with lyrics that really make you
contemplate your life and where you are in it.
Lorraine Leckie is an articulate lyricist who writes about feelings we
all know and understand, but maybe don’t know how to put words
to ourselves.
