Please meet my tortoises – Basil , Rosemary and Minty .
It is quite an interesting story how we came to own them as they have all been rescued . Before I was born , around 35 years ago , Basil was found on a building site where my Dad was working at the time around . My Dad bought him home to safety . Then years later , Basil escaped one day from the large enclosure in our garden and we had to put a notice out to say he was lost , hoping he would be returned , well eventually we got a call to say he had made his way in to one of our neighbours gardens who also had a tortoise which was called Rosemary and they had made friends ... which was so sweet , so Rosemary ' s owners felt the tortoises should be together and she wanted us to have her , so this is how she became part of the family . The third tortoise Minty is the youngest , and he was found on a farm that my brother was working on , Minty was just roaming around in a field , so he was the last join the clan :)
Basil – my parents have had him for around 35 years , and we estimate he is around 65 years Old Rosemary – we ' ve had her for around 25 years and she is around 40 years Old . Minty – had him 10 years , and he is around 20 years old now .
They need a big outdoor enclosure in the summer months , and they like eating lots of green vegetables and dandelion leaves , and we grow special tortoise plants too , plus give them plenty of fresh water . They need as much nutrition and vitamins before they go in to hibernation in the winter months .
They like a little Banana as a treat ....
I do have quite a funny story . When I was at primary school aged 7 years old , every Friday the head teacher picked someone from the class to bring in their pet in to the assembly room to show all the pupils in the school . Well , this time I was chosen , so I decided to bring in my tortoise Basil , and everyone was so excited as most people had never seen a tortoise before :) But then as I was talking about my pet , the pupils in the front row started pointing , screaming and laughing because when I looked down , Basil was having a pee all over the floor , which just missed the students !! I was quite embarrassed at the time , but in the end , we all did find it very funny and it was certainly an experience everyone remembered !! Lol .
