Reck In 1825-1866 was a Schoolteacher, dentist, physician, lawyer, graduate of the American Medical College in Philadelphia, member of Massachusetts Bar, proficient in Greek, and Latin. The Northern faction was further split into War Democrats and Peace Democrats, or "Copperheads," who insisted on immediate cessation of hostilities. Despite this division, despite being labeled as the party of slavery and the party which broke the Union, the Democrats, after a half century of rule, retained an amazing popular following. Lincoln needed the support of the War Democrats to win reelection in 1864, a fact he noted by his acceptance of Andrew Johnson of Tennessee, a Democrat, as his running mate. Dr. John S. Rock was one of the leaders of the movement for equal rights for black Americans in the North.
