T HE A NTEBEL - LUM P ERIOD : 1797 – 1860, in which Frederick Douglass (1817-1895) is in that time era. In 1841 delivered his first speech at a convention of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society. In 1852 Frederick Douglass was invited to address the citizens of Rochester on the Fourth of July celebration. The Whig party held its first convention in 1839. The Whigs were of great importance in political history. They were numerically a minority party, yet they succeeded in electing two Presidents (since both died, four Whigs held office) between 1828 (when the party began) and 1860, Harrison-Tyler and Taylor-Fillmore. The Whigs were a loose amalgamation of factions and minor parties who had one principle in common -- they were against the Democrats. In their two decades of existence, the Whigs established the principle which binds the major parties today, that is, that the two-party system offers the only hope of victory. No matter what the disagreement, the only salvation for opponents is to compromise, to gloss over the argument to find some common denomination of consensus so that, at least in an election year, a unified front can be established. Douglass' discussion of the Fourth of July was a logical development from a speech he had delivered on May 11, 1847, to a meeting of the American Anti-Slavery Society, following his “AL’JIHAD”– by, Imam Mahdi . © ® ™ : Of 842 Pages Is 588
