It was 1754 economic slave labor in Various Jobs: Wood, Leather, Cloth, Building, and Trade. By 1754 a self-sufficient economic unit, it required woodworkers, such as sawyers, coopers, and carpenters; leather workers, such as tanners and shoemakers; cloth workers, such as spinners, weavers, and tailors; and building-trade workers, such as bricklayers, painters, and plasterers. It was skilled slave labor that accounted for the rise of plantation manufactures. The slaves in the North were put to doing unskilled labor, particularly the "handyman" type. There were the Northern Slave. They were to be found in every skilled occupation, such as printing, goldsmithing, silversmithing, cabinetmaking, ropemaking, and carpentry. Negroes not only helped to build the New England ships that engaged in fishing, whaling, and trading, but the y were employed in manning them. They were agriculturists, stock farmers, such as sheep raising and horse breeding. Also, they were house servant - butler, valet, coachmen, cook, maid, or laundress. Each colony determined who was a slave and how its slaves should be treated. The Codes Strict. The more numerous the blacks, the more strict the slave codes.
